Jon Ola Sand is a Norwegian television executive, best known for heading the executive supervision of the Eurovision Song Contest from 2011 to 2020. Trained in production at NRK, he accumulated decades of experience in major televised events, including producing the Nobel Peace Prize Concert, the Amanda Award and the Melodi Grand Prix, and he was responsible for the Norwegian delegation to Eurovision from 1998 to 2005. As Executive Supervisor of Eurovision, Sand held final authority over the contest’s production and voting system. During his tenure he promoted significant structural changes: he introduced a producer-determined running order to optimize the television flow, tightened rules and increased jury transparency after investigations into manipulation, and in 2016 implemented a redesign of the points announcement to improve clarity and suspense. Under his management the event expanded its reach and digital presence, inviting participants from outside Europe and investing in online platforms. Sand also handled diplomatic and broadcasting controversies — including incidents involving Russia, China and Romania’s temporary withdrawal over debts — acting as an institutional interlocutor and defender of the organization’s inclusion values. After leaving the EBU in 2020, he returned to NRK to lead internal projects, retaining international recognition for his role in professionalizing and modernizing the Eurovision format.
