Josef Rudolf Mengele was a physician and an officer of the Schutzstaffel (SS) associated with the racial policies of the Nazi regime. Trained in medicine and anthropology, he worked as a researcher before joining the Nazi Party (1937) and the SS (1938). During World War II he served as a medical officer in military units and, from 1943, was assigned to the Auschwitz concentration camp, where he played a central role in the selection of prisoners and in cruel human experiments, especially those involving twins.
His experimental practices, devoid of respect for the lives and safety of prisoners, became emblematic of the medical abuses committed by the Nazi regime. After the evacuation of Auschwitz in January 1945, he fled to South America and lived for decades under a false identity. Despite attempts to capture him and requests for extradition, he was never brought to trial. He died in 1979 in Brazil; his death and subsequent forensic identification closed a controversial chapter in the history of medicine and war crimes.
The Mengele case remains a point of reference in discussions about medical ethics, human experimentation, and individual responsibility under totalitarian regimes.
