Josef “Sepp” Dietrich was a German military officer and politician, a leading figure in the Nazi movement and one of Adolf Hitler’s close companions in the 1920s and 1930s. Lacking formal military officer training, he rose through the ranks of the Schutzstaffel (SS) to the rank of Oberst-Gruppenführer and commanded the Waffen-SS, the SS’s military branch, holding high-responsibility roles during World War II. As leader of the Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler and later commander associated with the 6th Panzer Army, Dietrich took part in the occupation campaigns that preceded the war and in operations on the Western and Eastern fronts. His career includes active involvement in the Night of the Long Knives, when units of the Leibstandarte executed leaders of the Sturmabteilung, and participation in invasions such as Poland, France and Belgium. Dietrich was held responsible for serious war crimes: units under his command carried out massacres of prisoners and civilians, notably the Malmedy Massacre in December 1944. After 1945 he was convicted of war crimes in military and civilian courts and, once released, joined HIAG, an organization of former Waffen-SS members. His legacy is marked by the combination of a prominent military career and accountability for crimes committed under the Nazi regime.
