Joseph-Louis Lagrange was an Italo–French mathematician central to the scientific Enlightenment, known for recasting physical problems into rigorous analytical formulations. Born in Turin, he rose early to prominence as a teacher and researcher, holding positions at the academies of Turin, Berlin, and Paris. His masterwork, Mécanique Analytique, established mechanics as a discipline formally founded on calculus, dispensing with diagrams and favoring a purely analytical approach.

Throughout his career he applied differential calculus to diverse fields, from probability theory to acoustics and celestial mechanics. He solved classical problems such as aspects of the Moon’s oscillation and contributed to methods that now underpin the theory of many-body systems. He was also the first to state the mean value theorem in real analysis.

Acknowledged by contemporaries and governments — receiving academic awards and honors from Napoleon — Lagrange left a lasting legacy in mathematics and theoretical physics, both through the generality of his methods and his influence on subsequent generations of researchers.
