Joséphin Péladan (pen name of Joseph-Aimé Peladan) was a writer, art critic, and a leading figure in French occultism and symbolism in the late nineteenth century. First known for novels that combine Romanticism with occult themes, he attracted attention with Le Vice suprême and, above all, by cultivating a public persona defined by exotic costumes and flamboyant pronouncements that drew press attention and caricature. In 1888 he co-founded the Cabalistic Order of the Rosy Cross with Stanislas de Guaita, and from 1891 he led his own Catholic and aesthetic Rosy Cross of the Temple and the Grail. Beginning in 1892 he organized the Salons de la Rose-Croix (Durand-Ruel), exhibitions that gathered Symbolist and Idealist artists and became a touchstone for reviving sacralized art against the materialism of the time. As a theorist he published manifestos and studies on art—most notably The Art of the Idealist and Mystic (1894)—advocating the re-sacralization of art and critiquing the market and Naturalism. His legacy rests in the momentum he gave to aesthetic Symbolism and in connecting aesthetic theory, cultural activism, and esoteric practice, although his public image and theatrical excesses provoked controversy in his lifetime.
