Juan Belmonte was a Spanish Taurus whose career redefined the technique of bullfighting in the early 20th century. Born in Seville, he became known for an innovative stance: he remained almost motionless and extremely close to the bull, forcing the animal to move around him and breaking with the tradition of evasive maneuvers. That boldness earned him prestige, an extraordinary number of fights — including 109 in 1919, a record for decades — and numerous serious injuries over the course of his professional life. His rivalry with José Gómez Ortega (Joselito) marked the so-called Golden Age of bullfighting (1914–1920); Joselito’s death in 1920 left Belmonte as the central figure of the spectacle, a position that led to successive temporary retirements. After leaving the ring for good in 1935, he devoted himself to breeding bulls on a large estate in Andalusia. Beyond his activity in the ring, Belmonte remained present in literary and social culture: he was friends with writers such as Ernest Hemingway — who mentioned him in his works — and his life was recounted by Manuel Chaves Nogales. His technical and symbolic legacy transformed the image of the modern matador and influenced later generations.
