K. C. Jones was an American basketball player and coach, known for his long association with the Boston Celtics and for a successful career as a point guard and head coach. As a college player at the University of San Francisco he formed a backcourt duo with Bill Russell and won two NCAA championships (1955, 1956), and he earned a gold medal with the U.S. national team at the 1956 Olympics. In the NBA he spent nine seasons exclusively with the Celtics, playing a central role in a dominant era that produced eight championships between 1959 and 1966; he was noted for his tenacious defense.
After retiring as a player in 1967, he began a coaching career at Brandeis University and held assistant and head-coaching positions with several teams, including the Los Angeles Lakers, San Diego Conquistadors, Capital/Washington Bullets, and Seattle SuperSonics. As head coach of the Boston Celtics (1983–1988) he led the franchise to two NBA titles (1984, 1986) and to regular appearances in the Finals and at the top of the Atlantic Division.
His career led to induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1989 and to the retirement of his jersey by the Celtics. Jones also worked as a college broadcaster and, in subsequent decades, served in technical and consulting roles until retiring in the early 1990s. He died in 2020 of Alzheimer’s disease.
