Kam Fong Chun was an American police officer and actor, best known for playing Detective Chin Ho Kelly on CBS’s Hawaii Five-O. Born in Honolulu, he worked as a young boilermaker at the Pearl Harbor shipyard and witnessed the attack of December 7, 1941. After personal tragedies in the 1940s, he joined the Honolulu Police Department, where he served for 16 years before moving into radio, community theater, and real estate sales. His career combined real law-enforcement experience with television acting, which helped lend authenticity to his character on one of the era’s most popular police series. The prominence of his television work earned him lasting recognition, with occasional appearances in other shows and films. Fong also endured severe family losses and economic hardship in his youth, circumstances that shaped his personal life. Near the end of his career he returned to the role that made him famous to appear in a franchise-related pilot. He died in 2002, leaving a legacy tied to the representation of Asian American police officers on TV and the memory of Hawaii Five-O.
