Karel Appel was a Dutch painter, sculptor and poet regarded as one of the most vigorous figures of the post‑World War II generation. Trained at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam, he rose to international prominence as a founder of the CoBrA avant‑garde movement (1948), whose spontaneous, “childlike” aesthetic broke with academic conventions and provoked public scandals in the Netherlands, such as the controversy over the fresco Questioning Children, which remained covered for a decade.

Over the course of his career he worked in both painting and assemblage sculpture, using recycled materials and bold colors — white, red, yellow, blue and black — and drew influences from Picasso, Matisse and Jean Dubuffet. His pictorial poetry and use of a primitive visual language extended his practice across murals, canvases and three‑dimensional objects.

In the 1950s he established himself in Paris and broadened his international presence through travels and exhibitions in Europe and the United States; he took part in significant shows such as The New Decade at MoMA and exhibited in prominent galleries and museums. He also painted portraits of jazz musicians and is represented in major public collections from the Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris to the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.

His legacy has been preserved by the Karel Appel Foundation, created to protect, catalogue and promote his work; from the 1990s onward his recognition in the Netherlands grew again, with major retrospectives and frequent reexhibitions in museums devoted to postwar and experimental art.
