Karl Barth was a Swiss Reformed theologian whose work decisively shaped twentieth-century Protestant theology. Emerging from pastoral ministry, Barth reacted against the liberal theology of his training and proposed a perspective centered on divine revelation, emphasizing the paradoxical tension between God’s grace and judgment. This orientation became associated with what is called dialectical theology and influenced a wide range of thinkers and writers.
His Commentary on Romans marked a break with his earlier positions and paved the way for the massive Church Dogmatics, one of the largest systematic treatises of the twentieth century. Barth reinterpreted traditional Calvinist themes — election, sin, and the qualitative distance between God and humanity — with a lasting impact on Christian reflection.
In the public and political sphere, Barth played an important role in ecclesial resistance to Nazism: he was a coauthor of the Barmen Declaration and a central figure in the Confessing Church that opposed the subordination of the church to the regime. His legacy endures in both academia and religious life through his emphasis on the sovereignty of God and the authority of the Word.
