Katharine Houghton is an American actress and playwright, best known for her role as Joanna “Joey” Drayton in the 1967 film Guess Who's Coming to Dinner. The performance earned her a Golden Globe nomination and brought strong public attention, particularly because of the social debate provoked by the film’s interracial theme. Granddaughter of Katharine Martha Houghton Hepburn and niece of actress Katharine Hepburn, Houghton began in summer stock theatre and made her Broadway debut in 1965.
Despite her film success, she chose to return to the theatre due to the scarcity of substantial roles in Hollywood, building a steady stage career with more than 60 credits in Broadway, Off-Broadway and regional productions. In 1970 she received the Theatre World Award for her performance in A Scent of Flowers.
In addition to acting, Houghton has written plays and theatrical texts — including a number of Off-Broadway and regional works — and has given lectures on film and literature. Her theatrical work and return to the stage established her as a notable figure in the American theatre scene, with a legacy tied to both performance and dramatic writing.
