Kathryn Reed Altman was an American actress, writer, archivist and film consultant, best known as the third wife and collaborator of filmmaker Robert Altman. She began her artistic career in revues and acting roles—appearing in the film Million Dollar Mermaid (1952)—but after marrying Robert Altman in 1959 she devoted much of her professional activity to supporting and documenting her husband's work.
Over decades, Kathryn became the custodian of the Altman archive: she gathered photographs, documents and memorabilia, assembled 32 photo albums and created the documentary foundation that became the Robert Altman Collection at the University of Michigan. Her archival work and role as a consultant guided programming, retrospectives and preservation efforts around the director's films.
Coauthor of the memoir Altman (2014), she also served as a consultant on documentaries about the filmmaker's career and collaborated with institutions such as UCLA and MoMA on restoration and conservation projects. Her efforts helped secure and make Robert Altman’s legacy accessible and preserved a body of material important to the history of American cinema.
