Keir Hardie (James Kerr) was a Scottish trade union leader and politician, recognized as one of the founders of the British labour movement. Emerging from a childhood of early work in coal mines, he became known as an effective speaker and organizer: he led miners’ unions in Scotland, coordinated strikes in the early 1880s and promoted national workers’ conferences. Those activities laid the groundwork for his public career and for his advocacy of independent political representation for the working class. After breaking with the Liberal Party, Hardie helped create political formations for workers, assisting in the founding of the Scottish Labour Party and, later, the Independent Labour Party. He was first elected to Parliament in 1892 and, after returning to the House in 1900, helped form the committee that would become the modern Labour Party. From 1906 to 1908 he was the Labour Party’s first parliamentary leader, a role in which he symbolized the rise of labour politics within the British political system. In his later years he campaigned for causes such as women’s suffrage, Indian self-rule and opposition to the First World War. Hardie is remembered as a key figure in the consolidation of the politically organized labour movement and in the legacy of the Labour Party.
