Kim Campbell is a Canadian politician, lawyer and former lecturer who became the 19th Prime Minister of Canada in 1993, serving for 132 days. The first and only woman to hold the office to date, she had previously risen to prominence in Brian Mulroney’s government, where she was the first woman to serve as Canada’s Minister of Justice and the first to serve as Minister of National Defence in any NATO member country. A graduate in political science and law from the University of British Columbia, she began her political career in provincial politics in British Columbia before being elected to the House of Commons as a member of the Progressive Conservative Party. In cabinet she also held the Veterans Affairs and Attorney General portfolios, gaining experience in central ministries during a period of severe political challenges for her party. Her brief tenure as prime minister took place against a backdrop of deep unpopularity for the previous government and ended with an electoral defeat that drastically reduced the Progressive Conservatives’ representation. Over the course of her career, Campbell was noted for frank speeches and for breaking several gender barriers in Canadian politics; after leaving the leadership she remained active publicly on boards and in intellectual pursuits.
