Kim Clijsters is a former Belgian professional tennis player, known for reaching world No. 1 in both singles and doubles. Turning pro in 1997, she was noted for a rare combination of offense and defense, mobility and elasticity, becoming one of the most complete players on the women's tour. Over her career she won four Grand Slam singles titles (the US Open in 2005, 2009 and 2010, and the Australian Open in 2011), two Grand Slam doubles titles (Roland Garros and Wimbledon, both in 2003) and three WTA Tour Championships. She was a key figure in Belgium’s Fed Cup campaign in 2001. Her return to the tour in 2009, after a brief retirement and maternity leave, was historic: she won the US Open as a wildcard and became the first mother to win a Grand Slam since 1980, later reclaiming the world No. 1 ranking. She received broad public recognition and fair-play awards, including multiple Karen Krantzcke Sportsmanship Awards. Clijsters left a technical and sporting legacy for her ability to combine motherhood with top-level performance, for the power of her forehand and her exceptional defense, and is remembered as one of the most popular and influential players of her generation.
