Charles I (Charles Stuart) was King of England, Scotland and Ireland from 1625 to 1649, whose reign was marked by political and religious conflicts that culminated in the English Civil War and his execution. He became heir apparent after his brother’s death and established himself on the throne defending the divine right of kings and exercising royal prerogatives that brought him into conflict with Parliament, especially over fiscal matters and his attempts to govern without parliamentary consent. His religious policy—support for high-church Anglican clergy and tendencies viewed as sympathetic to Catholicism, together with his marriage to Henrietta Maria of France—provoked strong resistance from Puritans and the Scottish Covenanters. Conflicts with Scotland, including the Bishops’ Wars, and his refusal to support continental Protestants deepened internal divisions. Defeated by the parliamentary forces and the New Model Army, he was arrested, tried for high treason and executed in January 1649. The monarchy was temporarily abolished and restored in 1660 under his son Charles II. Charles I’s reign is remembered for its lasting impact on the relationship between the monarchy and Parliament and for the constitutional changes that followed.
