Indira Priyadarshini Gandhi was one of the central political figures in post‑independence India, serving as prime minister from 1966–1977 and again from 1980–1984. The daughter of Jawaharlal Nehru, she became the first woman to lead the Indian government and established a forceful leadership style based on centralized decision‑making and extensive use of political appointments. Her career included far‑reaching economic and social measures, such as the nationalization of banks and policies aimed at agricultural self‑sufficiency — the so‑called Green Revolution — which reduced the country’s reliance on grain imports. She is also credited with initiating India’s nuclear program, which culminated in the first test in 1974. The military victory in the 1971 Indo‑Pakistani war boosted her popularity, but the 1970s were marred by controversy: after being found guilty of electoral irregularities, she declared a state of emergency (1975–77), restricting civil liberties and suppressing opponents. She later returned to power, until she was assassinated by her Sikh bodyguards in 1984, in the aftermath of a military operation at the Golden Temple in Amritsar that intensified religious tensions. Her legacy is complex: admired for social and strategic achievements, she has also been criticized for authoritarian tendencies and for actions that exacerbated internal conflicts.
