Thomas Francis "Tommy" Dorsey was an American trombonist, trumpeter, composer and bandleader. Although generally ranked second, at any given time, to Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw, Glenn Miller or Harry James, Tommy Dorsey was, overall, the most popular American bandleader of the swing era, which lasted from 1935 to 1945.

Nicknamed "the Sentimental Gentleman of Swing" (o cavalheiro sentimental do swing), he combined the various aspects of swing. His notably melodic trombone style was the signature sound of his orchestra, but he successfully blended the different styles of swing with a mix of ballads and new songs. His band was made up of leading jazz musicians (including Bunny Berigan, Ziggy Elman, Pee Wee Erwin, Max Kaminsky, Buddy Rich, Charlie Shavers and Dave Tough), arrangers (including Sy Oliver and Paul Weston) and singers (including Frank Sinatra and Jo Stafford), which would come to define American popular music in the late 1940s and early 1950s.

He was the best-selling artist in the history of RCA Victor Records, one of the world's largest record labels, until the arrival of Elvis Presley, who made his first national television appearance on the program that Dorsey hosted with his brother Jimmy Dorsey.
