Joseph Raymond "Ray" Conniff was an American bandleader and arranger, considered the king of easy listening (rei do easy listening).
The son of a trombonist father and a pianist mother, it was natural that he pursue a musical career. As Ray recounted in his interviews, he took a correspondence course costing a single dollar that introduced him to the art of music theory. He formed his first artistic group while still a teenager.
Years later he deepened his training by studying at the Juilliard School. After performing and building a solid musical foundation as a trombonist and arranger in big bands such as those of Artie Shaw, Harry James and others, Ray began writing arrangements for Johnny Mathis, Guy Mitchell and Johnnie Ray, and, because of his talent, had the opportunity to form his own orchestra in 1955 at the invitation of Mitch Miller of CBS.
His style of pairing male voices with trombones, horns and baritone saxophones, and female voices with trumpets, clarinets and alto saxophones, gave him an unusual, singular character. His choir limited itself to articulating sounds like da-das and du-du-dus and other variants, instead of words, which imparted a "musical coloration", intensifying the softer tones while at the same time mellowing the stronger ones.
