Kirk Alyn, born John Feggo Jr., was an American actor whose name became associated with the first live-action screen portrayal of Superman. Trained as a singer and dancer on Broadway and in vaudeville, he moved to Hollywood in the 1940s, collecting dozens of small parts until winning the title role in the serial Superman (1948) and its sequel Atom Man vs. Superman (1950). These serials were milestones in adapting the character to the screen and introduced unusual narrative innovations for their time, such as sequences set in alternate dimensions. Alyn brought to the character a clear distinction between Clark Kent and Superman, influenced by radio tradition, and took part in pioneering visual-effects techniques, such as combining a leap with rotoscoping to suggest flight. After the serials, his career had difficulty escaping strong identification with the hero, alternating small roles in film and television until he retired. In later decades he benefited from nostalgia for the superhero, reappearing at conventions, in documentaries and in a brief appearance as one of Lois Lane’s fathers in the film Superman (1978). He published his autobiography A Job for Superman in 1971 and left a legacy as a pioneering performer of a pop-culture icon.
