Kurt Gerron, born Kurt Gerson, was a German actor, singer, and film director of Jewish origin, known for his vibrant career in Weimar cabaret and cinema. He performed in landmarks of German culture, such as the Berlin premiere of The Threepenny Opera, where he recorded the hit “Mack the Knife,” and appeared in key films like The Blue Angel alongside Marlene Dietrich. In the 1920s and 1930s he established a reputation as both performer and director, working with companies such as the Wilde Bühne and under directors including Max Reinhardt. With the Nazi rise to power he lost his jobs and was forced into exile, living in Paris, Vienna, and Amsterdam, where he continued theatrical and film work until the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands. Arrested in 1943, he was held at Westerbork and in 1944 deported to the Theresienstadt ghetto, where the regime compelled him to direct a propaganda film about the camp and to stage cabaret numbers. Gerron and his wife were sent to Auschwitz at the end of October 1944 and killed on arrival. His work and his notes on the film survive in fragments, inspiring documentaries, plays, and a historical novel that preserve his memory as a central figure of European Jewish culture and a victim of Nazi policies.
