Kurt Friedrich Gödel was one of the most influential logicians, mathematicians, and philosophers of the twentieth century, whose work transformed the understanding of the foundations of mathematics. He became famous for the two incompleteness theorems published in 1931, which demonstrated fundamental limits of axiomatic systems capable of formalizing arithmetic: there exist true propositions that cannot be proved within the system, and the consistency of a system cannot be demonstrated by methods internal to it. To obtain these results, Gödel developed the numbering technique that now bears his name, encoding formulas and proofs as natural numbers. Throughout his career he also made decisive contributions to set theory, showing—under consistency assumptions—that the axiom of choice and the continuum hypothesis are not refutable from the accepted axioms of the time. His work established lasting connections between classical logic, intuitionistic logic, modal logic, and proof theory. Trained at the University of Vienna, he participated in the intellectual milieu of the Vienna Circle and maintained ties with central figures such as David Hilbert and Albert Einstein. His legacy endures not only in mathematical logic but also in the philosophy of mathematics and computer science, influencing debates about formalization, decidability, and the limits of formal reasoning.
