Kurt von Schleicher was a German Army general and a central figure in the transition from the Weimar Republic to the Nazi regime. As a staff officer and later head of the Reichswehr’s Armed Forces Department, he acted as an interlocutor between the military and civilian governments after World War I, helping to shape defense policy and to devise maneuvers to circumvent the restrictions of the Treaty of Versailles. He was a protege of figures such as Wilhelm Groener and Hans von Seeckt and took part in secret industrial and military cooperation initiatives with the Soviet Union to preserve Germany’s war-making capacity. In politics, he became known as the architect behind government changes: he intervened in the fall of Hermann Müller’s cabinet in 1930, supported the appointment of Heinrich Brüning and later served as Minister of Defense in Franz von Papen’s cabinet. In December 1932 he succeeded Papen as chancellor, attempting to negotiate a political solution that would include either cohabitation with elements of the Nazis or the construction of an anti-Nazi front (Querfront), without success. His short tenure and his inability to check Adolf Hitler’s rise led to his dismissal in January 1933; afterward he tried to exploit divisions within the Nazi movement. On 30 June 1934, during the Night of the Long Knives, Schleicher and his wife were murdered on orders of the Nazi regime. His legacy is marked by his role as a civil–military mediator in Weimar and by his failed attempt to contain the political radicalization that culminated in Nazism.
