Larry Jeff McMurtry was an American novelist, essayist, screenwriter and bookseller whose work focused on the Old West and contemporary Texas. The author of titles such as The Last Picture Show, Terms of Endearment and the epic Lonesome Dove—the latter awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction—McMurtry became known both for his prose and for the film and television adaptations of his works. Several of his stories were adapted into films and miniseries that drew wide critical attention: projects based on his books accumulated dozens of Oscar and Emmy nominations, and the adaptation of Lonesome Dove produced significant cultural impact and viewership. In collaboration with Diana Ossana, he co-adapted the screenplay for Brokeback Mountain, which won the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay. Beyond fiction, McMurtry wrote essays, biographies and memoirs, and was notable as a collector and seller of books, leaving a documentary collection preserved in academic institutions. In recognition of his contributions to the humanities, he received the National Medal for the Humanities in 2014. His legacy endures in the renewal of the American West canon and his influence on generations of writers and filmmakers.
