Puyi (1906–1967), known as the last emperor of China, was the eleventh and final monarch of the Qing dynasty. He ascended the throne as a child in 1908 and was forced to abdicate in 1912 during the Xinhai Revolution, ending more than two thousand years of imperial rule in China. His brief restoration in 1917 lasted only days, after which he spent periods in exile and in relative dependence on various regional powers. In the 1930s Puyi became the nominal head of the puppet state of Manchukuo, established by Japan in Manchuria; in 1934 he was proclaimed emperor of that regime under tight Japanese control, a role for which he is historically remembered as submissive to the occupying authorities. After Japan’s defeat in 1945 he was captured by the Soviets, extradited and imprisoned by the newly founded People’s Republic of China, where he was classified as a war criminal and subjected to reeducation. Released in 1959, he wrote memoirs and later served on consultative bodies of the new Chinese government, expressing remorse for his role during the years of collaboration. His life — from child emperor to head of a puppet state and, finally, reeducated and politically reintegrated — makes Puyi an emblematic figure of the political and social ruptures that marked twentieth‑century China.
