Laurel B. Clark was a physician, a United States Navy captain, and a NASA astronaut, known for her role as a mission specialist aboard the Space Shuttle Columbia. She earned degrees in zoology and medicine from the University of Wisconsin–Madison and pursued a naval medical career with specializations in diving medicine, submarine medicine, and aerospace medicine, serving as a flight surgeon with aviation units and aboard submarine and amphibious forces. Selected by NASA in 1996, she worked on the payloads and habitability elements of the Astronaut Office and flew on STS-107, a mission devoted to scientific research in which she directly participated in biosafety experiments and studies of the effects of microgravity. The mission logged about 16 days in orbit and roughly 80 experiments carried out on alternating shifts. Clark died in the Columbia disaster in 2003, along with her crew. She was posthumously awarded the Congressional Space Medal of Honor and multiple military honors. Her memory is preserved through numerous tributes, including namesakes among craters and features on Mars, an asteroid, aerospace medicine facilities, and memorials and namings at educational and military institutions.
