Laurent Schwartz was a French mathematician whose central contribution was the development of the theory of distributions, a formalism that extended classical notions of function and made it possible to treat mathematically the singular objects that arise in physics and differential equations. His work, condensed in the treatise Théorie des distributions (1950–1951), transformed analytical techniques and had a direct impact on functional analysis and the theory of differential equations. Internationally recognized, he received the Fields Medal in 1950. Educated at the École Normale Supérieure and earning a doctorate from the University of Strasbourg in 1943, he carried out his principal work immediately after World War II and held a chair in Paris from 1953 to 1983. He was also a plenary speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in 1950. Author of numerous books and course texts — including works on complex analysis, Radon measures, semimartingales and applications of distributions to particle physics — Schwartz left a lasting legacy both through his technical influence and through the students he trained. Politically engaged, he experienced episodes of exile in the late 1950s; his autobiography, Un mathématicien aux prises avec le siècle, records his intellectual and historical journey.
