Lee Arnold Petty was an American stock car driver and one of NASCAR’s pioneering figures in the 1950s and 1960s. Recognized as the first three-time champion of the series’ top division, he was notable for competitive consistency — finishing in the top five in the championship in the first eleven seasons of the series. Winner of the inaugural Daytona 500 in 1959, Petty took part in NASCAR’s founding era and helped establish the sport in its early years. His prior experience as a moonshine runner informed his driving style and mechanical knowledge, which he applied to both driving and preparing race cars. As patriarch of the Petty dynasty, he founded Petty Enterprises with his sons, a team that would become one of NASCAR’s most successful. He is the father of Richard Petty and the grandfather of Kyle Petty, central figures in North American racing history. A serious crash in 1961 caused injuries that ended his regular career as a driver, but his influence on the sport endures through his family’s legacy and his role in the professionalization and popularization of stock car racing in the U.S.
