Leila Seth was an Indian jurist known for breaking barriers in the judiciary. She began her career as a lawyer in Patna and later in Delhi, handling a range of matters — tax, corporate, constitutional, civil and criminal — until her appointment in 1978 as the first woman judge of the Delhi High Court. In 1991 she became the first woman to head a state High Court, serving as Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court.
Appointed a senior advocate of the Supreme Court before joining the bench, Seth also served on inquiry commissions and public bodies: she was a member of the Fifteenth Law Commission of India, where she led amendments to the Hindu Succession Act that expanded daughters’ inheritance rights, and she served on the Verma Committee that recommended reforms to laws on sexual violence after the 2012 case. She also chaired human rights institutions and sat on panels addressing public policy.
Author of memoirs and an outspoken advocate for social causes, she was noted for her commitment to gender equality and civil rights, publicly supporting LGBTQIA+ rights. Her legacy is one of institutional pioneering and of legislative and judicial contributions that broadened access to justice and legal protection for historically marginalized groups.
