Leon Dabo, born Pierre Paul Léon Schott, was a tonal landscape painter who gained international recognition in the early 20th century. Trained in Paris, Munich, London and Italy, he was influenced by Puvis de Chavannes and Whistler; his work favors broad expanses of land, sea and clouds and a contemplative atmosphere that won critical acclaim and placement in significant museums. On returning to New York, Dabo moved from mural painting to the lyrical panorama of landscapes, especially those of the Hudson region, and played an active role in independent art movements — he was an early organizer of the famed 1913 International Exhibition of Modern Art (the Armory Show) and a leader of the group The Pastellists. During the First World War he served as an officer and interpreter for Allied forces and took part in intelligence missions; the experience contributed to a reduction in his later output and to his work as a lecturer on art. His legacy endures in his tonal sensibility and his influence on the reception of landscape in American art, and in works held by public collections in Europe and North America.
