Leon Russell (born Claude Russell Bridges) was an American musician and songwriter whose six-decade career crossed rock, country, gospel, blues, rhythm and blues and the so-called Tulsa sound. Trained as a pianist, he also played trumpet, saxophone and guitar, and worked extensively as a session musician and producer on recordings by artists such as the Beach Boys, Bob Dylan, Frank Sinatra, George Harrison and many others.

A prolific writer and performer, he recorded around 430 songs and 33 albums; he wrote hits recorded by others, such as “Delta Lady” (Joe Cocker), and composed enduring originals like “A Song for You” and “This Masquerade,” both widely covered. His records earned six gold discs and, over his career, he received major awards and honors, including two Grammy statuettes and induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2011.

As an influential figure in popular music, Russell also organized and participated in notable tours — most famously Joe Cocker’s Mad Dogs & Englishmen — and took part in high-profile events such as the Concert for Bangladesh. His versatility and role as a mentor to artists like Elton John left a lasting impact on twentieth-century American music.
