Liliane Bettencourt was a French heiress, businesswoman, and philanthropist, best known for her association with the cosmetics house L'Oréal, founded by her father Eugène Schueller. She inherited the controlling stake in the company in 1957 and for decades was one of its largest shareholders and an influential figure, remaining prominent on the board until 2012. Her wealth placed her among the world’s richest people, amplifying the impact of her business and financial decisions. Married to politician André Bettencourt, Liliane helped build a fortune that included significant art collections. In 1997 she, her husband, and their daughter established the Fondation Bettencourt Schueller, which concentrates resources on scientific research, education, culture, and social projects, and created the Liliane Bettencourt Life Sciences Prize. From the 2000s her public image was affected by family and legal controversies tied to her relationship with a personal protegé, which led to investigations and disputes over the management of her assets and ultimately to her being placed under judicial guardianship for health reasons. She died in 2017, leaving a business and philanthropic legacy and a lasting presence in France’s economic and cultural life.
