Lois Duncan Steinmetz was an American writer known for her pioneering influence on young‑adult literature, particularly in the suspense, horror, and thriller genres. The author of novels that probe fear, adolescent psychology, and borderline situations, she reached wide readership with titles such as I Know What You Did Last Summer, Summer of Fear, Down a Dark Hall, and Killing Mr. Griffin — several of which were adapted for film. Her work balances tense plots with complex teenage characters, earning both commercial success and critical recognition.
In addition to young‑adult novels, Duncan published children’s books, poetry collections, and nonfiction. After the unsolved murder of her daughter in 1989, she spent decades writing lighter books for children and personal accounts, including Who Killed My Daughter? and its follow‑up One to the Wolves. In 1992 she received the Margaret Edwards Award from the American Library Association for her contribution to literature for adolescents.
A journalism professor at the University of New Mexico and a veteran of the magazine industry, Duncan also worked as a journalist and photographer in her youth. Her legacy endures in the incorporation of dark, realistic themes into young‑adult fiction and in her influence on subsequent generations of genre authors.
