Lorne John “Gump” Worsley was one of the most notable goaltenders in Canadian hockey from the 1950s through the 1970s. Emerging in the minor leagues—where he earned All-Star honors and an MVP in the WHL—he established himself in the NHL with standout seasons for the New York Rangers, Montreal Canadiens and Minnesota North Stars. He won the Stanley Cup four times as a member of the Canadiens and collected individual awards, including the Calder Trophy as top rookie and two Vezina Trophies.

Known for a fierce playing style and for refusing to wear a mask, Worsley also became famous for his humor and personal eccentricities. He suffered multiple injuries during his career—knees, back and concussions—and dealt with issues such as a fear of flying and episodes of nervous exhaustion, which influenced decisions to step away from and return to the ice.

Upon retiring in the mid-1970s, he left lasting statistical marks: hundreds of wins and a long presence among the era’s most frequently used goaltenders. His legacy was recognized with induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1980, and he remains noted for his longevity, competitiveness and distinctive character within the sport.
