Lotte Reiniger (Charlotte Eleonore Elisabeth Reiniger) was a German director and animator, recognized as a pioneer of silhouette animation. Trained in the theatrical practice of Max Reinhardt, she early developed a paper-cut technique that she adapted for cinema, producing more than 40 films over her career. Her work combines the influence of traditional shadow theater with mechanical innovations, including an early form of the multiplane camera. Her best-known feature, The Adventures of Prince Achmed (1926), is considered one of the first—and possibly the oldest surviving—animated feature films, admired for its expressionist aesthetics and its use of lines and color to evoke exotic settings. Other notable works include Papageno (1935), with a score inspired by Mozart. Reiniger was active in the avant-garde circles of Weimar, collaborating with artists and filmmakers such as Carl Koch (her husband), Bertolt Brecht, and Fritz Lang. Her travel research—to Egypt and with Greek shadow artists—expanded her visual vocabulary, allowing more dynamic movement in the cut figures. Pursued by the political climate of the 1930s, she lived in exile across Europe while continuing to produce and experiment with animation and music for sound films. Her technical and aesthetic legacy influenced generations of animators and preserved a unique tradition in the history of animated cinema.
