Louis Jean-Baptiste Alphonse Bachelier was a French mathematician whose work laid the foundations of mathematical finance and modern probability theory. In his 1900 thesis, Théorie de la spéculation, he introduced the use of Brownian motion to model prices—an idea that would underpin many later financial models, including the theoretical framework that made the Black–Scholes formula possible decades later.

Despite its originality, his work was not immediately recognized: the thesis received an honorable evaluation and was published in a prestigious journal, but applying mathematics to financial problems was not widely accepted by the contemporary community. Bachelier continued to publish on diffusion processes, continuous probabilities, and games of chance, building a body of work in mathematical probability.

His academic career experienced interruptions and setbacks—including military service during the First World War, difficulties obtaining permanent positions, and professional disputes that were only resolved later. Posthumous recognition came from the mid-20th century onward, when mathematicians such as Kolmogorov and Lévy reassessed the importance of his ideas, now central to stochastic modeling and market theory.
