Louis de Broglie was a French theoretical physicist whose central contribution was the formulation of the idea of matter waves, relating a particle’s wavelength to its momentum (λ = h/p). This hypothesis, presented in his 1924 thesis, anticipated the experimental demonstration of electron diffraction by Davisson and Germer in 1927 and helped establish the notion of wave–particle duality, a cornerstone of modern quantum mechanics. For this work he received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1929.

In addition to proposing matter waves, de Broglie developed the so‑called pilot‑wave theory, a causal interpretation of quantum phenomena in which particles are guided by a phase wave. This line of thought was later expanded by David Bohm in the de Broglie–Bohm interpretation. De Broglie published numerous books and articles on wave mechanics, electron optics, and the foundations of physics, influencing theoretical debates throughout the twentieth century.

A member of the Académie Française and secretary of the Académie des Sciences, he also took part in efforts toward international scientific cooperation that contributed to initiatives such as CERN. Born into the French nobility, he became the 7th Duke of Broglie; his career combined influential theoretical work with institutional leadership in French science.
