Louis-Ferdinand Céline, the pen name of Louis-Ferdinand Destouches, was a French physician and novelist whose work transformed twentieth‑century fiction. Trained as a doctor in Rennes, he practiced in Montmartre and worked on tuberculosis research before devoting himself to literature. His debut made a huge impact: Voyage au Bout de la Nuit (Journey to the End of the Night) introduced an innovative style, using colloquial language and rhythms close to speech, and influenced generations of writers and readers.
In the years that followed he consolidated this stylistic revolution in works such as Mort à Crédit (Death on Credit), maintaining a caustic, anti‑heroic and nihilistic view of the human condition. However, his public career was marked by political vehemence: between 1937 and 1941 he published antisemitic pamphlets that led to charges of collaboration during the Nazi occupation and made him a deeply controversial figure.
After the war he lived in exile, was tried in absentia and later amnestied, returning to France in 1951. In the following decades he published accounts of his exile that regained part of the critical attention. His legacy is twofold: acknowledged as a literary innovator while remaining the subject of ongoing debate because of his political and moral positions.
