Louis Kahn was an architect of Estonian origin who became an American citizen and whose career unfolded mainly in Philadelphia. Renowned for a monumental, monolithic approach, Kahn favored buildings that expose mass, materials, and structural logic, producing works with strong physical presence and clear tectonics. His practice paired rigorously and meticulously executed buildings with provocative conceptual proposals, some of which remained on paper. During his career he designed emblematic, institutionally significant buildings, including the Yale University Art Gallery, the Salk Institute, the Kimbell Art Museum, the Indian Institute of Management in Ahmedabad, and the Jatiyo Sangshad Bhaban in Dhaka. He also designed libraries, synagogues, cultural centers, and residences that influenced generations of architects. Beyond his built work, Kahn shaped future architects through teaching and with ideas about monumentality, light, and materiality in modern architecture. His work is frequently cited in discussions of form, function, and meaning in the twentieth century.
