Luciano Pavarotti was an Italian singer (lyric tenor), a great interpreter of the works of Bellini, Donizetti, Verdi and Puccini, among others in his vast repertoire. He is recognized as the tenor who popularized opera worldwide.
Pavarotti began his professional career as a lyric tenor in 1961 in Italy. That year he made his first international performance, in Giuseppe Verdi's La Traviata, in Belgrade, Serbia (then Yugoslavia). He sang in the major opera houses of Italy, in the Netherlands, in Vienna, London, Ankara, Budapest, Barcelona and Rio de Janeiro. The young tenor became known during an Australian tour alongside the renowned soprano Joan Sutherland in 1965. He made his United States debut in Miami, also at the invitation of the soprano. His position as the leading lyric tenor of his generation came between 1966 and 1972, during his performances at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan and in other Italian opera houses. At the Metropolitan Opera House, he sang the role of Tonio in Gaetano Donizetti's La fille du régiment and received the title of 'King of the High Cs' (Rei dos Dós) when he sang the aria 'Ah mes amis…pour mon âme'. He gained worldwide fame for his brilliant and beautiful tone, especially for his range. He was considered the finest tenor of his generation in Verdi's Aida and in La Bohème, Tosca and Madama Butterfly (Giacomo Puccini), even though some of the roles were not ideally suited to his vocal type. At the end of the 1970s and in the 1980s, he continued to perform in the world's greatest theaters.
