Ludwig Eduard Boltzmann was an Austrian physicist recognized as one of the founders of statistical mechanics and a central figure in establishing statistical thermodynamics. His steadfast defense of atomic theory at a time when atomism was still disputed, and his theoretical contributions, built essential bridges between classical thermodynamics and a microscopic description of matter. A professor at several universities of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Boltzmann produced important work on velocity distributions and entropy, directly influencing contemporaries and successors such as Maxwell and Gibbs.
