Ludwig Erhard was a German economist and politician, a central figure in formulating the so-called social market economy that guided Germany’s reconstruction after World War II. As director of economic commissions in the western occupation zone, he played a decisive role in the 1948 currency reform and in the liberalization of prices and markets—measures considered essential to the rapid postwar recovery. A key name in establishing the Federal Republic’s economic order, Erhard served as Minister of Economic Affairs in Konrad Adenauer’s early governments, where he consolidated market policies combined with social protections. In 1963 he became Federal Chancellor and remained in office until 1966; his brief tenure ended with a coalition crisis that cleared the way for a grand coalition government. An academic with a doctorate in economics, Erhard also left institutional and symbolic legacies: his proposals influenced debates on deregulation and stability policies in Western Europe, and his name has been honored by professional institutions. He is remembered as one of the architects of the German economic miracle, whose impact extended beyond the immediate postwar period.
