Luis Walter Alvarez was a prominent American experimental physicist and inventor whose career was centered mainly at the University of California, Berkeley. Known for his skill in combining innovative instrumentation with data analysis, he received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1968 for developing techniques using the hydrogen bubble chamber that enabled the discovery of numerous resonant states of elementary particles. Over his life he registered more than 40 patents that yielded practical applications in optics, detection, and electronic systems. During World War II he was part of the Manhattan Project and contributed to the design of detonators, and also worked on the development of radar and low-visibility landing systems. After the war he took part in the development of accelerators and synchrotrons. In the 1980s he collaborated with his son, a geologist, on the proposal that an asteroid impact was linked to the K–T extinction, a hypothesis later supported by the identification of the Chicxulub crater. His legacy combines experimental advances in particle physics with wide-ranging technological innovations.
