M Lamar is an American composer, countertenor, pianist and multimedia artist whose work combines performance, film, sculpture and installation. Initially trained in visual arts, he left graduate studies in sculpture to devote himself to music and moved to New York for vocal training. His practice spans contemporary classical and experimental music, with an emphasis on voices and aesthetics that blend the sacred and the theatrical. Known for works that examine representations of Blackness, Black masculinity and interracial desire, Lamar coined terms such as “Negrogothic” and “doom spirituals” to describe an aesthetic that mixes elements of horror, romance and racial critique. Some of his work engages with thinkers such as Frantz Fanon and Michel Foucault, and with a range of literary and musical references from jazz to philosophy. His major projects include Funeral Doom Spiritual, presented as a multimedia installation built around a historical case that interrogates racial violence and sexuality, and Lordship and Bondage: The Birth of the Negro Superman, whose libretto cites figures from jazz and philosophy. Beyond the music scene, he has taken part in public debates on sexuality and race, expanding his prominence as an engaged artist.
