Mady Mesplé was a French coloratura soprano who rose to international prominence from the 1950s through the 1980s. Trained at the Conservatoire de Toulouse, she began her career in the title role of Lakmé, which she sang more than a hundred times, and established a core coloratura repertoire—Lucia, the Queen of the Night, Olympia, Rosina and Gilda—at houses such as the Palais Garnier, the Metropolitan Opera, La Scala, Covent Garden and the Bolshoi. Known for a bright tone, agile technique and ease in extreme high notes, Mesplé was also praised for her ornamentation and trills; critics compared her to Dame Joan Sutherland. At the Opéra Garnier she took part in important premieres, such as Constance in Poulenc’s Dialogues of the Carmelites, and sang several roles in works by Ravel and Verdi. Throughout her career she maintained an active recording presence, spanning opera, French operetta (notably Offenbach) and recitals, with notable recordings of Lakmé, Werther and Guillaume Tell, as well as Ravel’s complete songs. In the 1960s she expanded into contemporary music, premiering works by Menotti and performing pieces by Henze and Boulez. She also devoted herself to teaching, giving master classes and holding positions at the conservatories of Nice, Lyon and Bordeaux. She died in 2020 in Toulouse.
