Maithripala Sirisena is a Sri Lankan politician who served as the country’s president from 2015 to 2019. A long‑time parliamentarian since 1989, he rose through the ranks of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) and held several ministerial portfolios, including Agriculture, Irrigation and Mahaweli Development, where he promoted agricultural subsidy programs and large‑scale irrigation projects. His 2015 presidential candidacy emerged as an alternative to the Rajapaksa government; he won the election with broad support from rural Sinhalese voters and Tamil and Muslim minorities, running a campaign defined less by a personal platform than by opposition to Rajapaksa. Upon taking office, he committed to a “100 days” plan aimed at rebalancing executive power, strengthening the judiciary and Parliament, fighting corruption and investigating allegations of war crimes. Over his career, Sirisena also served in SLFP leadership, including as party general secretary, and led the government caucus at various times. His record combines short‑term institutional reforms with a political career built on rural mobilization and roots in Sri Lanka’s traditional party structures.
