Mani Shankar Aiyar is an Indian politician and former diplomat, known for his long service in the foreign service and for his parliamentary career with the Congress Party. He began his career in the Indian Foreign Service in 1963, served as India’s first Consul General in Karachi (1978–1982), and held senior posts such as positions in the Ministry of External Affairs and in the Prime Minister’s Office before entering active politics in 1989. He represented the Mayiladuthurai area in the state of Tamil Nadu in multiple terms of the Lok Sabha and also served as a nominated member of the Rajya Sabha. In addition to his parliamentary work, he was responsible for internal party departments such as political training and policy planning, and is known as a contributor and political commentator. Aiyar is the author and editor of books on Indian politics and relations with Pakistan, with stated interests in grassroots democracy, neighborhood foreign policy, and nuclear disarmament. His public and political career includes controversial episodes and statements that sparked public debate and prompted party repercussions, which form an important part of his record as a public figure.
