Valerie Jean Solanas was a writer and radical activist associated with militant feminism of the 1960s, best known for the SCUM Manifesto (1967), a pamphlet that proposes the subversion of the patriarchy and provoked controversy for its misandrist and provocative tone. Self-published and circulated especially from 1968 onward, the manifesto polarized interpretation: some read it as satire or social parody, others as a literal call to violence against men. Solanas defended herself as a social propagandist and insisted on the seriousness of her ideas.
Active in New York’s artistic circles, she had a fraught relationship with Andy Warhol after he withheld the script of her play Up Your Ass; the dispute culminated in the 1968 assassination attempt on Warhol—an event that marked her public life and made her a central figure in debates about gender, violence, and mental health. Her life included periods on the margins of society, prostitution, and involvement with Greenwich Village’s countercultural scene.
Solanas’s legacy is ambiguous: some feminist movements reject her for an extreme rhetoric, while others point to the SCUM Manifesto as a document that radically articulated frustrations with the patriarchal oppression of its time. Her work and the violence associated with her person continue to provoke reflection on the limits of political provocation, representations of women, and the intersection of art, activism, and personal disorder.
