Marc Bolan (born Mark Feld) was an English musician, singer and songwriter, recognized as a central figure in the emergence of glam rock in the early 1970s. As founder and leader of the band T. Rex — and earlier of the duo Tyrannosaurus Rex — Bolan rose to prominence with his own compositions and striking performances; the single "Ride A White Swan" and the album Electric Warrior are landmarks of his output and had a decisive influence on the British scene. His aesthetic presence, exemplified by his appearance with glitter on Top of the Pops in 1971, helped define the visual language of the glam movement, while his songwriting and guitar playing inspired later generations of artists. Throughout his career Bolan also explored fusions of rock with funk, soul, gospel and R&B, broadening his stylistic reach. He died prematurely in 1977, leaving a lasting legacy as a songwriter and cultural icon; his importance was recognized posthumously with T. Rex’s induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Monuments and memorials at the site of his death attest to the continued relevance of his work.
