Marcel Moyse was a French flutist whose career as a soloist, teacher, and author deeply influenced the modern school of flute. Trained at the Conservatoire de Paris, he studied with figures such as Philippe Gaubert and Paul Taffanel, and became known for a clear, flexible, and penetrating tone associated with the so‑called “French style.” He served as principal flute in major Parisian orchestras and maintained an extensive career as a soloist and recording artist.
In addition to performing, Moyse taught at institutions including the Conservatoire de musique du Québec à Montréal and was one of the founders of the Marlboro Music School and Festival in Vermont. His pedagogical approach—teaching “not how to play the flute, but how to make music”—trained generations of flutists who became international references.
Author of studies and methods such as De la Sonorité and Tone Development Through Interpretation, Moyse left a lasting legacy in technical repertoire and flute pedagogy. His influence is evident both in tone and in the teaching practices adopted by many of the leading flutists of the 20th century.
